Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I login to watch the Commencement Livestream?

A: In order to share this exciting day with friends and family who are not in Shanghai, we are providing a livestream of Sunday's ceremony. Your graduate will receive a special Commencement Username and Password a few days before the event for you to use to access the screening. Meanwhile, NYU Affiliates will be able to login use their NetID and password.

Q: Will there be parking available for Commencement?

A: The campus parking lot is not open to outside parking. There are a number of public parking lots near the Oriental Arts Center, although we recommend that you travel by subway.

Q: Can families and guests visit the Academic Building?

A: Yes, but please adhere to the following schedule since we anticipate a higher volume of visitors that weekend.

BEFORE MAY 27. Normal sign in procedures.

SATURDAY MAY 27 8AM-1PM. Must present Family Pass and Event Ticket.

SATURDAY MAY 27 1PM-9PM. Must present Family Pass and be accompanied by NYU Shanghai student.

SUNDAY MAY 28 8AM-5PM. ONLY STUDENTS  (unless issued with a ticket to watch the live screening)

SUNDAY MAY 28 5PM-9PM. Must present Family Pass.

Q: Can underclassmen, staff and faculty attend the ceremony?

A: Priority for seating will be given to graduating students and their families and guests, and underclassmen participating in the staging of the event. Faculty will receive special information about attire and seating via direct email. Any extra seating will be allocated closer to the event. The entire NYU Shanghai community is invited to watch the event via livestream on this website, with a special live screening also set up in the Academic Building.

Q: Is there a rehearsal for Commencement?

A: There will not be a full rehearsal for everyone. We are preparing a guide that you can look over, but the procession is fairly easy. The first 8-10 students in the procession will be invited to attend a rehearsal since they will lead the group in, everyone else just needs to follow their lead.

Q: Can children attend the event and do they need a guest ticket?

A: All guests must have a guest ticket. For the enjoyment of all guests, babies and children under 7 will not be allowed in the Hall. Family members with small children are welcome to watch the event at our live screening in the Academic Building and join in other celebrations around the event.

Q: Can I request more than four guest tickets?

A: After initial orders were placed in November, a ballot was held in December to allocate extra tickets. All guest tickets have now been allocated. If you have family members and friends who do not have tickets, they will be able to watch the event live via video in the Academic Building, or at home over a weblink.

Q: What if I no longer need any of my guest tickets?

A: Students are advised to only order the number of tickets they need. If you no longer require your allocation, please let know as soon as possible so that your tickets can be offered to others.

Q: Can I give my spare tickets directly to classmates who need extra?

A: Please note that seating will be assigned. We advise that you return spare tickets to the event organisers as soon as possible so that your tickets can be redistributed and families seated together where possible (see above).

Q: When can I collect my tickets?

All tickets will be available for students to collect from Student Life a week before the ceremony. You will be notified by email when ticket collection opens. Graduating students must present their student identification (Student ID card/Net ID number) to receive their graduate ticket and guest tickets.

Q: Can someone pick up my gown and tickets?

A: Yes, students can nominate a proxy. They will need to have an email, WeChat message, or handwritten note indicating that you have requested them to pick the items on your behalf.

Q: Can I order guest tickets to the Commencement event if I have not yet applied for graduation?

A: Yes. All students who are expected to graduate or be close to graduating by May 2017 have been allocated tickets to walk in the ceremony and can order guest tickets. Graduating students must separately apply for graduation with the Registrar before December 13 in order to register to receive their diplomas at the ceremony on May 28.

Q: Can I walk in the ceremony and order guest tickets if I will not be graduating until after May 2017 the next semester?

A: If you will be close to meeting your graduation requirements by May 2017, you may walk in the ceremony, but not collect a diploma. Contact the Registrar if you are not sure whether you are on the Ceremony List.

Q: Is there a cost for hiring graduation attire?

Every effort has been made to keep costs to a minimum. The cost to hire a graduation cap and gown is 150RMB.
