Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will there be parking available for Commencement?

A: The campus parking lot is not open to outside parking. There are a number of public parking lots near the Oriental Arts Center, although we recommend that you travel by subway.

Q: Will the event be streamed online, and where can I watch it?

A: In order to share this exciting day with friends and family who are not in Shanghai, the University will provide a Live Webcast of the ceremony. Your graduate will receive a special Commencement Username and Password a few days before the event for you to use to access the screening. Meanwhile, NYU Affiliates will be able to login use their NetID and password.

Q: Can underclassmen, staff and faculty attend the ceremony?

A: Priority for seating will be given to graduating students and their families and guests, and underclassmen participating in the staging of the event. Faculty will receive special information about attire and seating via direct email. Any extra seating will be allocated closer to the event. The entire NYU Shanghai community is invited to watch the event via Live Webcast, with a special live screening also set up in the Academic Building.

Q: How many Family Tickets can I order?

A: If you have family members and friends who do not have tickets, they will be able to watch the event live via video in the Academic Building, or at home over a weblink.

Q: Do children need a ticket?

A: All guests must have a ticket. Children under the age of seven will not be allowed in the hall. Family members with small children are welcome to watch the event at our live screening in the Academic Building and join in other celebrations around the event.

Q: Can I order Family Tickets to the Commencement event if I have not yet applied for graduation?

A: Yes. All students who are expected to graduate or be close to graduating by May 2018 have been allocated tickets to walk in the ceremony and can order guest tickets. Graduating students must separately apply for graduation with the Registrar before December 2017 in order to register to receive their diplomas at the ceremony on May 23.

Q: Can I walk in the ceremony and order Family Tickets if I will not be graduating until after May 2018?

A: If you will be close to meeting your graduation requirements by May 2018, you may walk in the ceremony, but not collect a diploma. Contact the Registrar if you are not sure whether you are on the Ceremony List.

Q: What if I no longer need any of my Family Tickets?

A: Students are advised to only order the number of tickets they need. If you no longer require your allocation, please let know as soon as possible so that your tickets can be offered to others.

Q: Can I give my spare tickets directly to classmates who need extra?

A: Please note that seating will be assigned. We advise that you return spare tickets to the event organizers as soon as possible so that your tickets can be redistributed and families seated together where possible (see above).

Q: When can I collect my tickets?

All tickets will be available for students to collect from Student Life one week before the ceremony. You will be notified by email when ticket collection opens. Graduating students must present their student identification (Student ID card/Net ID number) to receive their Family Tickets.

Q: Can I ask someone to pick up my gown and tickets?

A: Yes, students can nominate a proxy. They will need to have an email, WeChat message, or handwritten note indicating that you have requested them to pick the items on your behalf.

Q: Is there a cost for hiring graduation attire?

Every effort has been made to keep costs to a minimum. The cost to hire a graduation cap and gown is 150 RMB.
