Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will there be parking available for Commencement?
A: There are a number of parking lots near the venue, however public transportation is a more convenient alternative. Please note that the campus parking lot will NOT be open to outside parking.
Q: Will the event be streamed online, and where can I watch it?
A: In order to share this exciting day with friends and family who cannot be in Shanghai, the University will provide a Live Webcast of the ceremony.
Your graduate will receive a special Commencement Username and Password a few days before the event, and you can use that to access the screening. NYU Affiliates will also be able to log in with their NetID and password.
Q: Can underclassmen, faculty, and staff attend the ceremony?
A: Priority for seating will be given to graduating students, their families, and guests. Underclassmen participating in the staging of the event will also have priority.
Faculty will receive special instructions about attire and seating by email. Any extra seating will be allocated closer to the event. The entire NYU Shanghai community is invited to watch the event via Live Webcast.
Q: How many Family Tickets can I order?
A: Each participating student may request up to four guaranteed Family Tickets. You can also request additional tickets, which will be allocated by lottery.
Family members and friends without tickets will be able to watch the event via Live Webcast.
Q: Do children need a ticket?
A: All guests must have a ticket. Children under the age of seven will not be allowed in the Ceremony Hall.
Q: I’m graduating, but I haven’t applied yet. Can I still order Family Tickets to the Commencement event?
A: Yes. All students who are expected to graduate or are close to graduating by May 2019 have been allocated tickets to walk in the ceremony and can order guest tickets.
However, please make sure to apply separately with the Registrar for graduation by February 3, 2019 to receive your diploma at the Ceremony on May 30.
Q: Can I walk in the ceremony and order Family Tickets if I will not be graduating until after May 2019?
A: If you will be close to meeting your graduation requirements by May 2019, you may walk in the ceremony, but you cannot collect a diploma. Contact the Registrar if you are not sure whether you are on the Ceremony List.
Q: What if I no longer need some of my Family Tickets?
A: Please only order the number of tickets you need. If you no longer require some of your allocated tickets, please let email@example.com know ASAP so your tickets can be offered to others who want to attend.
Q: Can I give my spare tickets directly to classmates who need extras?
A: Seating will be assigned, so if you give your spare tickets to your classmates, their guests will be seated with your block of tickets. Please return spare tickets to the event organizers ASAP so that your tickets can be redistributed and families can be seated together (see above).
Q: When can I collect my tickets?
A: Students will be able to collect their tickets from Student Life one week before the ceremony. You will be notified by email when ticket collection is open. Graduating students must present their student identification (Student ID card/Net ID number) to receive their Family Tickets.
Q: May I ask someone to pick up my gown and tickets?
A: Yes. That person will need to have an email, WeChat message, or handwritten note indicating that you have asked them to pick up the items on your behalf.
Q: Is there a cost for borrowing graduation attire?
A: Every effort has been made to keep costs to a minimum. The cost to rent a graduation cap and gown is 150 RMB.
