Graduate Checklist

Congratulations on reaching the final stage of your journey at NYU Shanghai! As an upcoming graduate, here’s what you need to know, and do, to get ready for the big day:

Check Eligibility and Apply for Graduation

In order to receive your diploma and walk in the commencement celebration, all eligible students should apply for graduation with the Office of the Registrar before December 2017.  Please note that your Degree Audit Sheet must be up-to-date and you are responsible for showing on it that you will have fulfilled 128 credits by the end of Spring 2018 and completed all degree requirements. If you have any questions about completing all academic requirements, please contact your Academic Advisor.

Students who are close to graduating in May 2018 may still walk in the ceremony, but will not receive a diploma. Contact shanghai.registrar@nyu.edu to be added to the Ceremony List.

Order Tickets

Each participating student may request up to four guaranteed Family Tickets, and be entered into a ballot for additional Family Tickets. Requests for Family Tickets should be received no later than March 1, 2018.

You will be notified of your total Family Ticket allocation by email in March. Your Commencement tickets will be ready for collection from the Student Life Office in 110 one week before the ceremony.

Please note: All seniors who are eligible to graduate, or will be close to graduating, in May 2018 will automatically be invited to walk in the ceremony. You do not need a ticket for yourself.

Make Plans with Family and Guests

Provide your family and guests with commencement ceremony information and discuss with them the best time to visit you. If they are planning to stay for longer than the graduation celebrations on May 22 and 23, consider making arrangements together for the week after the ceremony, as the week before will be busy and you are likely to also want to attend farewell events with friends.

Have Your Photograph Taken

Chinese Diploma

You are required to sit for an official ID photo in order to receive your Chinese diploma from the Chinese Ministry of Education. This photograph can only be taken by one agency, who will be next on campus on February 28, 2018. You MUST attend this session in order to receive your Chinese graduation diploma.  You must wear a white button-down shirt for the ID photo. It can be with or without a jacket and with or without a tie.  An on-the-spot direct payment of 20 RMB is required. Please have exact change.

Commencement Program Portrait

A professional portrait of each graduating student will be printed in the Commencement Program. The next portrait photo session for students who were away during the fall semester will take place on February 28, 2018.

What to wear: after the formal Diploma ID photo, this is chance to change into something more comfortable that represents your style and personality (please avoid wearing tops with large slogans, and tank tops/t-shirts). Smart business casual is encouraged.

After the shoot, your photos will be made available to you for download, and can be used in your professional profiles. You will be able to indicate your preferred portrait for the Commencement Program. Please be aware that your portrait may also be used in other related university publications and presentations.

Order Your Cap and Gown

Attend a Cap and Gown Fitting event on campus to get measured and place your order to receive your academic regalia for the commencement ceremony. The next fitting will take place on February 28, 2018. Look out for an email with information about the time and location.

Please note that gowns come in two lengths: mid-calf or down-to-ankles. Women should take into consideration whether you plan to wear a dress or heels on Commencement day and choose accordingly.

All caps and gowns will be available for pick-up on campus in May. If you did not attend a fitting, you will still be able to collect a cap and gown, but your preferred size may not be available.

You will be required to pay a fee of 150 RMB for the rental of the gown. Acceptable forms of payment include cash, WeChat and Alipay. Graduates can keep their caps as mementos of the day.

Visit the Career Development Center

Make a career counseling appointment to discuss the next steps in your professional development. As you prepare for the next stage of your life, the Career Development Center is there to support you, whether you are applying for jobs or considering graduate school. Give Back

As you look to the future and reflect on your experiences here at NYU Shanghai, take some time to give back to the community in the form of the 2013 Fund.

Each year, the 2013 Fund seeks to sponsor scholarships for incoming freshmen. Last year through the contributions of both faculty and the student body, the Fund was able to raise $18,000 to sponsor 9 freshmen. Your support can help make another student’s dream come true.

Make your donation today, and proudly wear your 2013 Fund donor pin on your gown on graduation day! Pins can be collected from Room 1413 between 9am-5pm.
