Graduate Checklist

Congratulations on reaching the final stage of your journey at NYU Shanghai! As an upcoming graduate, here’s what you need to know and do to get ready for the big day:

Check Your Eligibility and Apply for Graduation

In order to receive your diploma and walk in the commencement celebration, all eligible students should apply for graduation with the Office of the Registrar by February 3, 2019.

Please note that your Degree Audit Sheet must be up-to-date, and it must show that you will have fulfilled 128 credits and completed all degree requirements by the end of Spring 2019. If you have any questions about completing your academic requirements, please contact your Academic Advisor.

Students who are close to graduating in May 2019 may still walk in the ceremony, but will not receive a diploma. Contact shanghai.registrar@nyu.edu to be added to the Ceremony List.

Order Tickets

Each participating student may request up to four guaranteed Family Tickets. Students with more than four guests may also apply for additional Family Tickets, which will be allocated by lottery in March. Requests for Family Tickets should be received no later than March 4, 2019.

You will be notified of your total Family Ticket allocation by email in March. Your Commencement tickets will be ready for collection from Student Life one week before the ceremony.

Please note: All seniors who are eligible to graduate, or will be close to graduating in May 2019 will automatically be invited to walk in the Ceremony. If you are graduating, you do not need a ticket.

Make Plans with Family and Guests

Provide your family and guests with Commencement Ceremony information and discuss with them the best time to visit you.

If they want to come for a longer visit than the duration of graduation celebrations on May 29 and 30, consider making arrangements for the week after the ceremony. You will be busy the week before the Ceremony, and may also want to attend farewell events and say goodbye to friends.

Chinese Diploma Photos and Commencement Program Portraits

Chinese Diploma ID Photo

You are required to sit for an official ID photo in order to receive your Chinese diploma from the Chinese Ministry of Education. This photograph can only be taken by one agency, which will next be on campus March 4, 2019.

You MUST attend this session in order to receive your Chinese graduation diploma. You must wear a white button-down shirt for the ID photo, jackets and ties are optional. An on-the-spot direct payment of 15 RMB will be collected. Please have exact change.

Commencement Program Portrait

A professional portrait of each graduating student will be printed in the Commencement Program. The next portrait photo session for students who were away during the fall semester will take place on March 4, 2019.

What to wear: after the formal Chinese Diploma ID photo, this is your chance to change into something more comfortable and show off your style and personality. Please avoid wearing tops with large slogans, tank tops, and t-shirts. Smart business casual is encouraged.

After the shoot, your photos will be available for download, and can be used in your professional profiles. You may also select the portrait you prefer for the Commencement Program. Your portrait may also be used in related university publications and presentations.

Order Your Cap and Gown

Attend a Cap and Gown Fitting event on campus to get measured and place your order to receive your academic regalia for the commencement ceremony. The next fitting will take place on March 4, 2019. Keep an eye out for an email with information about the time and location.

All caps and gowns will be available for pick-up on campus in May. If you did not attend a fitting, you will still be able to collect a cap and gown, but your preferred size may not be available.

The gown rental fee is 150 RMB. Please pay via online transfer here (you can still use Alipay and WeChat). Rented gowns must be returned, but graduates can keep their caps as mementos of the day.

Give Back

As you look to the future and reflect on your experiences here at NYU Shanghai, take some time to provide an incoming first year student the same opportunities you’ve had by contributing to the NYU Shanghai 2013 Fund.

Each year, the 2013 Fund sponsors scholarships for first-year students. Your support can help make another student’s dream come true.

Make your donation today, and proudly wear your 2013 Fund donor pin on graduation day! Pins can be collected from Room 1413 between 9am - 5pm.

Good luck everyone on your future journeys!
